This is because by age 7, enough permanent teeth have come in to establish your child’s bite and allow us to identify potential problems.

Early Orthodontic Treatment
Early treatment with an orthodontist can set your child up for success and eliminate the need for more drastic measures later in life. Your child needs to come to see a Specialist Orthodontist around the age of seven, so we can catch problems before they begin. We can use mild and gentle treatments at this stage to guide your child’s bite as they continue to grow.

At this age, your child might not need treatment at all, and we don’t recommend it unless we think it is best for them. We can work out a plan with you to begin treatment later in their life when it is opportune for everyone. There is no obligation for your child to undergo treatment.
How can I tell if my child needs orthodontic treatment?
Some signs that may indicate the need for an early orthodontic examination are:
Early or late loss of baby teeth
Difficulty chewing or biting
Crowded or poorly positioned teeth
Jawbones that shift or make noise
Biting the cheek or roof of the mouth
Teeth that do not meet at all
Jaws and teeth that are out of proportion to the rest of your child’s face
Finger-sucking or pacifier habits continued beyond the age of 6

What will my child’s consultation entail?
Before we begin treatment, we will ask that you bring your child in for a free consultation. During this appointment, we will discuss your child’s dental history and take digital x-rays and scans of your child’s smile to detect any problems with their teeth and jaws. These digital x-rays are far safer than traditional x-rays, with drastically reduced radiation levels. In addition, we will be able to see the results of these scans immediately on our computer screen and can discuss orthodontic options in detail with you.
If your child isn’t ready for orthodontic treatment, we can see them again as they age. Your child might have good enough dental health that they won’t need to see us again! Suppose we do decide to go ahead with orthodontic treatment for your child. In that case, we will provide you with all the necessary information, including the costs and financing plans available for their treatment. We can even proceed with treatment on the same day if we decide it is beneficial for everyone. We will do everything in our power to provide your child with a comfortable and enjoyable experience from the start to a flawless finish.
