Treatment for children & teens
Give your child the gift of self-confidence with a beautiful forever smile. At Share a Smile Orthodontics, we believe the optimal time to visit an orthodontist is at 7 or 8 years of age. This is because by age 7, enough permanent teeth have come in to establish your child’s bite and allow us to identify potential problems.
If your child has missed that window, don’t worry! It’s never too late to pursue orthodontic treatment. We provide effective treatment for all ages at Share a Smile. Your teenager will be happy to know that we can provide them with discreet options like clear braces and nearly invisible Invisalign® aligners.
Early orthodontic treatment
Early treatment with an orthodontist can set your child up for success and eliminate the need for more drastic measures later in life. It’s important for your child to come see a Specialist Orthodontist around the age of seven so we can catch problems before they begin. We can use mild and gentle treatments at this stage to guide your child’s bite as they continue to grow.
Early treatment provides the opportunity to:
- Guide incoming teeth into optimal position
- Regulate the width of your child’s jaws
- Lower the risk of trauma to prominent front teeth
- Correct thumb-sucking habits
- Reduce the likelihood of teeth becoming stuck or impacted under the gums
At this age, your child might not need treatment at all, and we don’t recommend it unless we think it is best for them. We can work out a plan with you to begin treatment later in their life when it is opportune for everyone. There is no obligation for your child to undergo treatment.
How can I tell if my child needs an orthodontist?
Some signs that may indicate the need for an early orthodontic examination are:
- Early or late loss of baby teeth
- Difficulty chewing or biting
- Crowded or poorly positioned teeth
- Jawbones that shift or make noise
- Biting the cheek or roof of the mouth
- Teeth that do not meet at all
- Jaws and teeth that are out of proportion to the rest of your child’s face
- Finger-sucking or pacifier habits continued beyond the age of 6
If you recognise any of the above symptoms in your child, bring them in for a free consultation with us. Even if they aren’t showing these telltale signs, there could be hidden issues that we can uncover using our technology and expertise.
Treatment for teenagers
Adolescence can be awkward for even the best of us, so we don’t want orthodontic treatment to make things any harder on your child. That’s why we provide swift and discreet treatment options at Share a Smile Orthodontics. Our braces are smaller and more efficient than ever and come in a clear option for added discretion. More invisible still, we offer Invisalign® treatment to teens so they can achieve their dream smile without anyone being the wiser! What will my child’s consultation entail?
Before we begin treatment, we will ask that you bring your child in for a free consultation. During this appointment, we will discuss your child’s dental history and take some digital x-rays and scans of your child’s smile to detect any problems with their teeth and jaws. These digital x-rays are far safer than traditional x-rays with drastically reduced radiation levels. In addition, we will be able to see the results of these scans immediately on our computer screen and can discuss orthodontic options in detail with you.
If your child isn’t ready for orthodontic treatment yet, we can see them again when they get older. Your child might have good enough dental health that they won’t need to see us again at all! If we do decide to go ahead with orthodontic treatment for your child, we will set you up with all the information necessary including the costs and financing plans available for their treatment. We are even able to proceed with treatment the very same day if we decide it is beneficial for everyone. We will do everything in our power to provide your child with a comfortable and enjoyable experience from start to flawless finish.Book a free consultation
